The statutorily-created Controlled Substances and Pain Management Advisory Council was convened last week by the Department of Health to consider updates to the Opioid Prescribing Rules. The VDH presentation can be found here. Updates under consideration are technical and clarifying in nature and not major changes that impact the intent or implementation of the Rule. Changes would include: clarifying the definition of “skilled nursing facilities;” making permanent the exceptions in the rule for hospice and hospice-eligible patients; and allowing prescribers to not co-prescribe naloxone in instances where the patient already has access to naloxone. VMS has had an opportunity to meet with the Department of Health to provide feedback on the proposed changes and is supportive of the updates. The next step is for the Department to release a draft rule for formal public comment.
