Join Us in Congratulating the VMS' Leadership Award Winners

Every year, VMS asks our members to nominate Vermont leaders who have provided outstanding contributions to the medical profession, to health organizations and to the welfare of the public. VMS is proud to announce this year's 2025 Leadership Award Recipients, who have demonstrated a steadfast commitment to the health of their patients and all Vermonters.
The recipients are:
Distinguished Service Award - Barbara Dalton, MD
"Dr. Dalton has been a pillar of the Springfield, VT community for nearly four decades, embodying the very best of family medicine. Known for her compassion, dedication, and tireless advocacy, she has cared for generations of patients with unwavering commitment, often going above and beyond to ensure their needs are met. Her patients consistently describe her as kind, thoughtful, and deeply engaged, while colleagues praise her as a mentor, teacher, and leader who sets the standard for primary care in Vermont. As she prepares for a well-deserved retirement, she is leaving a lasting legacy of exceptional clinical expertise, mentorship of future providers, and profound impact on her community’s health and well-being."
Physician of the Year Award - Whitney Calkins, MD
"Dr. Calkins is an exceptional mentor, innovative teacher, and provider of transformative clinical care. At the Larner College of Medicine, she co-created and advises the Culinary Medicine program, equipping medical students with practical skills in nutrition and lifestyle counseling. In her family medicine practice, she leads the groundbreaking “Skills Before Pills” program, reimagining chronic disease care through team-based, holistic approaches that inspire both patients and future physicians"
Physician Award for Community Service - Sujata Singh, MD
"Dr. Singh is Vermont’s only pediatric ophthalmologist and she provides outstanding care while championing access to vision services for vulnerable populations. She has led free vision screening programs across Vermont, educated the public through outreach, and co-directed an international school-based vision screening initiative in The Gambia. Her commitment to community service has improved the lives of children and families both locally and globally"
Citizen of the Year Award - Merideth Plumpton, RN
"Merideth has led Vermont’s immunization programs for more than a decade, ensuring access to vaccines for children and adults while guiding statewide strategies that achieve some of the highest coverage rates in the nation. She is a nationally recognized leader (recipient of the 2024 AIM Rising Star Award) whose expertise and public presence have provided clarity, confidence, and science-based guidance during times of vaccine hesitancy and public health disruption. Her leadership continues to make an extraordinary and lasting impact on the health of Vermonters."
Founders' Award - Lisa Catapano - Friedman, MD, DLFAPA
"Dr. Catapano-Friedman has devoted more than three decades to advancing psychiatric care in Vermont. As medical director of The Memory Clinic, she has guided the treatment of thousands of patients with dementia while leading clinical trials that have shaped modern therapies. A trusted colleague to pediatricians, schools, primary care providers, and a national leader in her field, she embodies clinical excellence, mentorship, and advocacy."
